Introducing New Skip Liquid Detergent
THE EVOLUTION OF WASHING.
AN EVENING OF ART, ENTERTAINMENT, FASHION AND RE-INVENTION
Soaring from a giant washing machine, a stunning art installation of 1500 seagulls, 300 dragonflies, 50 fish and 750 waterlilies – all made from empty Skip bottles – came to life as the magical centrepiece to the launch of new, improved Skip liquid detergent at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday, 25th August.
The scale of it all is breath-taking; the perfect white tableau, like a dream; the lighting absolutely ethereal. The washing machine stands nearly 4 metres high. Bubbles spill out of the door into the waterlilies while the fish, dragonflies and gulls sweep down the passage. It’s a sophisticated, enchanting, fairy-tale vision.
The all-white theme was carried through by couturiers, Malcolm Kluk and David Tlale, who dressed the beautiful hostesses in their signature style complemented by delicate headpieces – again created from Skip bottles - by design house, Mila.
But it was jazz chanteuse, Auriol Hays, who had the limelight in a lavish shawl of Mila’s lotus flowers as she added her smooth and mellow lounge sounds to the stylish ambience.
Trendy local bloggers, leading fashion media, and design enthusiasts mingled with fashion designers like Gert-Johan Coetzee and Colleen Eitzen as they enjoyed delicious canapés and champagne adorned with hibiscus flowers.
(It’s also certain that several guests managed to sneak more than their share of the mouth-watering macaroons before the end of the evening!)
Guests enthusiastically tweeted the event, urging friends and family to see the Skip installation at the V&A before it’s disassembled on Monday, 5th of September.

Finally, as the culmination of a chain of beautiful invitation gifts, the guests left with their very own Skip laundry bags, a clever clothes-peg USB stick and 2 bottles of the brand new, radically re-thought Skip concentrate liquid. It gives your clothes a better clean, better shape and better colour! It’s the evolution of washing – it’s the new better way to do laundry.
Ethne Whitley, spokesperson for Unilever says, “New Skip is better in so many ways. It’s a gentle yet effective detergent that cleans thoroughly while caring for the most delicate fabrics. We know women are going to be pleased to see that new Skip liquid detergent cares for their clothes as much as they do.”
“The Waterfront installation is a beautiful farewell to the trusted old Skip, and a stunning, exciting welcome to the new, improved liquid,” adds Kerry Alicks, Skip’s Brand Manager. “It’s also completely appropriate that the previous Skip bottles were used to show that the new packaging is recyclable.”
In a 2-month project guided by the skills of conceptual artist, Reep Verloren van Themaat, and respected design house, Mila, empty bottles were cut into specific shapes by hand, then joined together with cable ties. (Just a single dragonfly took 16 cable-ties to create.)
10 people only finished hanging the V&A Waterfront installation at dawn before Cape Town’s most stylish fashionistas were entertained with an exquisite soiree of art, fashion and re-invention.
So, while you’re visiting the Skip installation at the Waterfront before September 5th, why not get yourself some new Skip concentrated liquid at the same time? For a better clean, better shape, and better colour in either hot or cold water. New Skip Liquid Detergent - It’s the new, better way to do laundry!.
